Hockey Club

Hockey Club is for all girls in P6 and P7 and takes place on a Friday afternoon between 3pm and 4pm in the back playground. In the second term this year we had the opportunity to practise on the astro pitches at Foundry Lane.

Weekly sessions usually include warm-ups, a range of games and drills to develop lots of different skills; and finish with a short game to put all those skills into practice. It's a great way to have fun, get active, work as part of a team and learn new skills. Every half-term we try to have a mini-tournament also.

Gum shields and shin pads are essential pieces of kit for each girl and hockey sticks can be provided. We try to get outdoors as much as possible so coats, hats and gloves are a good idea as we get into the colder months.

Hockey Team

Our hockey team has had a really successful year! In March we took part in the Newtownabbey Regional Tournament. Our A Team came runners up over all and our B team came second in their group.

Our A team qualified for the Northern Ireland Hockey Finals at Stormont in April. There was a fantastic atmosphere and we really enjoyed playing teams from all over NI. We qualified for the Cup tournament there and just missed out on getting to the semi-finals.

In March we played in the Winter Hockey League tournament at Foundry Lane, playing against the larger schools from our area. We won every match and won the tournament overall.

We are extremely proud of our hockey players for their hard work, commitment, sportsmanship and all their achievements!

Antrim Sixes Champions!

Two girls’ hockey teams, accompanied by Miss McMillian and Mrs Aicken, participated in the Antrim Sixes Hockey Tournament at Antrim Forum on Friday 31st May. Despite the changeable weather, we had a brilliant day and enjoyed the opportunity to play teams from a wider area. The B Team came up against Kings Park first of all. Rose McKee made a promising start by taking a shot at goals. Unfortunately it was just short of the scoring area and was disallowed. Great defending and team work from Connie Stewart and Charlotte Green at the back resulted in a 0-0 draw. In our next match against Mossley B, super passing between Ellie Barkley, Naomi Tolland and Evie Scarlett resulted in Evie scoring 2 goals, leading to a 2-0 win. In our third match against Spires PS, Emma Taylor showed excellent footwork in goals, however 2 slipped past and the match finished 2-0 to Spires. After that, in a match against Antrim A, it was a 2-0 loss for Fairview, and a 1-0 loss against Randalstown in our final match. This meant Fairview B finished 4th in their group which was a pleasing result. They worked so hard as a team and showed fantastic determination.

Fairview A came up against Greystone PS in their first match of the tournament. Grace McWilliams scored 4 goals and Chloe Montgomery scored 1, leading to a 5-1 win. In our next match against Antrim B, Grace McWilliams and Chloe Montgomery each scored a hattrick and Sophia Campbell and Martha Mussen each scored 1 goal, making it an 8-0 win for Fairview A. Next came Maine PS and Maisie Meikle had to make some strong clears in defence. Sophia Campbell scored making it a close 1-0 win. Our captain for the tournament Martha Mussen showed what a dynamic player she is by switching from defender to forward and scoring 2 goals in our next match against Mossley A. Sophia Campbell scored 2 goals and Chloe Montgomery scored another hattrick to make it a 7-0 win for Fairview. In our next match against Ballycraigy, our forward players each showed off their talents. Martha Mussen and Grace McWilliams each scored a hattrick, Sophia Campbell scored another goal and Chloe Montgomery scored 4. The score was 11-0. Fairview was a clear winner in their group and had sailed through to the semis!

In the semi-finals we came up against Antrim A again. This was a tough match and Aimee Montgomery showed a strong defence and did some super sweeping. Our forwards each showed us what they could do again - Grace McWilliams scored 2 goals and Martha Mussen, Sophia Campbell and Chloe Montgomery each scored a goal making it a 5-0 win. We were through to the final!

In the final we came up against Maine once again. After a quiet tournament for goalkeeper Sophie Montgomery, she had to step up and make a brilliant save. When watching our squad, Andy Gleghorne of Antrim Hockey Club who refereed the match and whose sons play hockey at Ireland and GB level, said our girls played the highest level of primary school hockey he has ever seen! What commendation! Grace McWilliams placed herself in front of Maine’s goalie and after a pass from Chloe Montgomery, reverse flicked the ball into the back of the net. Another goal from her followed as well as 2 from Chloe Montgomery, making Fairview clear 4-0 winners.

The A team, cheered on by our B team, parent supporters and super proud teachers, received their plaque and medals as champions of the tournament. It has been a joy and privilege to watch these girls develop in skill and team work throughout the year. While we are sad this may be the last time our P7s represent Fairview for hockey, we know this will not be the last we see of these superstars on the pitch!
