On Wednesday morning we were split into 8 groups each with a different letter a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h and teacher. Two groups did the same activity at the same time for example A and B did bouldering at the same time. Some other activities were canoeing, zip line, climbing and abseiling.

Our Group was C with Scott Wilson. We had a lot of fun activities like canoeing and bouldering. In canoeing, we rowed a boat across Castlewellan Lake. We stopped a few metres from shore and jumped in – in truth we did very little rowing and more jumping in! Mr McAllister kidnapped me from my canoe and eventually chucked me in! The water was so cold that it was bone chilling, but it was great fun! And for bouldering we climbed rocks and went through streams of water and a small waterfall. There was a water slide which, although it was fun to go down, was extremely cold so some people didn’t do it. The big jump at the end was amazing!

Food was always very good. We usually got to choose between two options. On the first day we had pasta bake and garlic bread for lunch. Lunch and dinner were both big, warm meals and very delicious. We got seconds if we wanted it but the portions were big enough!

At a certain time the teachers were to inspect our rooms to check if they were tidy (our room was the tidiest but Mr McAllister always says we are the best).

At the start of the trip, we got out of our buses and left our luggage and had a walk up the mountain. It was a long journey, it was about 45 minutes each way. We walked up the side of the Glen River and then down the forest paths to the YMCA. We also had a Night Walk which took twice as long as the one before and was darker! Not too many went on this, lots of people were very tired and stayed behind. We were not allowed torches on the night walk and we soon found the moon was bright enough. We walked up to the viewpoint and then down past Shepherd’s Lodge and back to our rooms. We sang ‘It’s fun to stay at the YMCA’ at the top of the hill and ‘My Lighthouse’ when we saw the lighthouse out at sea. There were some amazing views.

One of my favourite things was walking to Newcastle to get an ice cream on the first night! Everyone got a large ice cream! Robbie ate too much and was sick.

The Leaders at the YMCA centre were absolutely wonderful! They had a sense of humour and they had great accents as they came from all over the world. They were good at guiding you at the activity you were doing and were kind to you all the time! It was great!

P6 had a GREAT time at the YMCA centre! Thank you to all the staff from school who looked after us. We made memories that will last a lifetime.
