Fairview Wins Gold!

We are delighted to be able to update you on our most recent award. On Tuesday our Eco Committee met with Jonny and Emma from Sustrans who awarded our school the Gold Schools Mark. We are delighted to be only the fourth school in Northern Ireland to win this award and the first school out of inner Belfast. Over the past five years we have had a huge focus on developing sustainable travel to and from school and have seen huge improvements with now two thirds of our children actively travelling to school on a regular basis. These children arrive more alert and are ready to learn. As you are aware, throughout our time with Sustrans we have installed a new bike shed and run a monthly active travel week with various activities, competitions and prizes. Two of our most successful events have been Ditch the Stabilisers with P1 children and our annual ‘Big Big Breakfast’. We have received help along the way from local companies including Mango bikes, Asda, Lidl and Spar. Wiggle Chain Reaction Cycles have sponsored a new bike as an active travel reward in the spring term. A huge well done to our Eco Committee who have done the majority of planning for our Active Travel weeks, they organise our sponsorship and often arrive early to ensure a smooth running of events. You as parents have been supportive throughout the programme and no doubt will continue to encourage your children to travel actively to school. We must also say thank you to Sustrans for their dedicated support to our school staff. A special word of thanks must go to Mrs Cousley who has overseen the Sustrans initiative over the last few years. She has worked so hard at getting all our pupils on board with their Active Travel! Well done Mrs Cousley, staff and all our pupils!
