Ballylumford Visit - P6DH

On Friday 7th June, P6DH had the opportunity to visit Ballylumford Power Station in Islandmagee. It was quite an adventure! Mrs Houston told us all about the history of Islandmagee on our journey there. It is such a beautiful place. At Ballylumford, we had to sign ourselves into the main office. We got to wear a hard hat, ear defenders, goggles and a hi-vis vest for safety. We felt like real workers from the station. Mr Penney and Mr Anderson took us on a tour around the new C Station and the old B Station. The B Station was originally built on the farm land that Mrs Houston’s grandfather owned. The chimneys were so tall and we learnt all about generating electricity and why Power Stations are positioned so close to the sea. ‘

I loved seeing the men working in the control room. They had lots and lots of computer screens!’ Matthew Vance

‘We learnt that the gas turbine spun a generator at 50 revolutions per second.’ Megan Stevenson

‘I enjoyed seeing the old part of the station which is not in use anymore. We were able to see the inside of an old generator.’ Raphael Penney
