First Forest School Session of the Year in P6

Primary 6 started their Forest School programme last Friday.  Our Primary 6 pupils visit the Sixmilewater Park throughout the year to take part in a variety of outdoor learning lessons.  On Friday, pupils enjoyed ‘Literacy Logs’, making great use of the Conservation Area in the park.  This lesson complimented all the work going on in P6 about parts of speech, particularly adjectives and adverbs.  Have a look at our Twitter feed to see some pictures from the day and also the Primary 6 section of the website.

“I loved getting muddy while looking for sticks to make an adverb.  My group made ‘fiercely’ and then put it in the sentence, ‘the fox growled fiercely’”

Kailen Gault

“I liked ‘Literacy Logs’ because it is wild in a way.  It made learning adverbs fun.  There was a massive rabbit that was so still, it looked like a statue.”

Luke Wilson

Forest School Session 2 - Autumn Treasure Hunt

Last Friday P6 enjoyed Forest School during the Power Down Day. When we arrived at the park we got into groups and did an Autumn Treasure Hunt. Amy, Kyle and Jay were in my group. We looked for fallen twigs covered with moss, spiky cones, acorns in their cups, star shaped leaves, evergreen leaves, sycamore keys, prickly sweet chestnut shells and different coloured leaves. We couldn't find conkers and hazelnuts but maybe next time. We also played the leaf game, the girls won - Girl Power!

During our Forest School lesson we found some acorns and leaves that were different colours. We also found lots of sycamore keys around the forest. Some people found transparent leaves. We went around the whole forest completing our Autumn Treasure Hunt. We had fun exploring. It was a great day.

European Day of Languages 2016

Primary 6 had a great time during European Day of Languages

We dressed in the colours of the German flag. Mrs McAllister taught us Spanish and Mrs Wilson came and helped us with some German. We had a great day.

 STEM

In P6 we have been learning about WWII. As we studied 'The Home Front' we discovered that many people had to make shelters in their gardens to keep themselves safe from the bombs. We worked in groups to plan and make a model Anderson shelter. We even added some vegetable patches and washing lines to our creations. Here are a few examples:

Northern Ireland War Memorial - World War II Museum, Belfast

During our visit we heard some really interesting stories about The Belfast Blitz and enjoyed looking around the museum. We also had the opportunity to try on some WWII uniforms.

Class Visits From SUNI

Caroline and Des have been visiting all our Primary 6 classrooms to tell the pupils about the different miracles of God. We listened to the story of The Feeding of the 5000, Crossing the Red Sea and Healing the Blind Man. Our pupils have had lots of opportunities to take part in drama, reading and talking and listening activities in groups and as a whole class.

We look forward to learning all about the Bible in our next few lessons.

Terrific Tasting With BBC Terrific Scientific

We have been given the opportunity to link up with BBC Terrific Scientific this term. This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to take part in some wonderful and exciting science experiments. So far we have been able to investigate whether we are non-tasters, tasters or super tasters! The results were surprising and the children absolutely loved taking on a scientific role. We are all looking forward to participating in lots more scientific experiments in the next few months.

 World Book Day Fun

We celebrated World Book Day in style this year with a Roald Dahl theme. All the children made a fabulous effort to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character- even the teachers joined in the fun! It was a brilliant day!

Thank you so much to the all the children and parents for taking the time to embrace our theme with open arms - our children looked simply amazing!
