P6 Girls Football Success

Last Thursday, Mr Kennedy accompanied 2 teams of girls to compete in a 6-a-side girls' football tournament held at the Valley Leisure Complex. Having never played competitively together before the girls took some time to 'gel'. The B team worked very hard in their opening fixtures but couldn't find the opposition goal. After 4 defeats the girls then drew their 5th match before winning their 6th match 2-1, Carlee Gyle scoring both the goals. The girls were delighted with their progress but unfortunately it wasn't enough to qualify for the head-to-head stages.

On the other hand, the A team won 3 of their opening 6 games and played some great football along the way. This meant that they qualified 4th in their section and reached the head-to-heads. In the quarter-final Caitlin French scored the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 win against a super Ballyhenry PS team. Credit must also go to Abi McKeen in goals who made some great saves to preserve the narrow lead. After going 1-0 down in the semi-final against Carnmoney PS the girls fought back incredibly well to win 4-1, goals coming from Katie Ireland (2), Caitlin French and Holly Herron. In the final we met Whitehouse PS and again went behind early, this time to a penalty. However, once again the girls showed how much they had grown as a team over the course of the day. The girls fought back to win 3-1, Caitlin French scoring a hat-trick. The girls (and Mr Kennedy) were ecstatic to win the inaugural girls' tournament. Well done to all the girls in both teams.
