Girls' Football Tournament

Recently Mr Kennedy and Mrs French took two teams of girls to the Newtownabbey and District Primary Schools Girls' Football Tournament held at the Valley V36 complex. Mrs French's 'A' team began the day with a 1-0 loss against Glengormley Integrated PS followed by a 3-0 loss against St. Bernard's PS. However, the girls began to gel and followed these up with a 1-0 win against Carnmoney PS and a 1-0 win against Whitehouse PS 'B' team; Anna Healy scoring both goals. In the mean time Mr Kennedy's team began their day with a 1-0 win against Lowwood PS, Grace McAllister scoring a last minute goal to seal the win. Next was a 1-0 win against both Earlview PS and Carnmoney PS 'B' team, Jenna Henderson scoring the winning goal in each game. The girls then lost their next game 3-1 against King's Park PS, Grace McAllister with the goal, before winning their fifth game 1-0 against Whitehouse PS 'A' team, this time Erin Stewart was the long range match winner. These results meant that both teams qualified for the quarter finals where they would play...each other! Both teams had chances to score in their quarter final match-up but some timely tackles and great goalkeeping meant that the score remained 0-0 and was to be decided by penalties. Grace McAllister and Jenna Henderson scored while goalkeeper Carlee Gyle made two super saves meaning that Mr Kennedy's team progressed to the semi-final where they would meet Whitehouse PS 'A' team again.

This time Whitehouse took an early lead which was then cancelled out through great persistence and a super goal by Grace McAllister to make it 1-1. However, seconds later, Whitehouse scored again to retake the lead. Try as they did, the Fairview girls couldn't find another equaliser. Grace had a shot well saved late on while Jenna hit the bar in the final seconds. This meant the girls went through to a 3rd/4th place playoff against King's Park PS. In this game Grace McAllister scored again to make it 1-0, but despite excellent defending and goalkeeping from the Fairview girls, King's Park equalised to take the game to penalties. Once again though, Carlee Gyle saved two penalties while Grace McAllister, Eva Weir, Erin Stewart and Jenna Henderson all scored theirs to mean that the Fairview girls finished the day in 3rd place.

Well done to both teams of girls who took part. It was brilliant to see so many of our girls playing football and having fun. Many thanks to Mrs French for coaching the girls after school this year - it has been a great asset to our after school activities. The last session will be next week Monday, 11th June.
