Cricket Finals’ Day at Stormont

Last week, our cricket teams represented Newtownabbey in the NCU Cricket Finals at Stormont. We brought a boys' team and a girls' team and both performed with distinction. The girls' team played three group games and qualified for the play-offs as a runner-up. In the third place play off, the girls had really picked up the skills required to perform in a match and won a thrilling contest with the last ball of the game. The team of 8 girls ALL did themselves proud and with three of them being P6 girls, the team looks in good shape for next year! The boys entered their competition knowing they were playing against the best. The standard is so high, with many of the schools able to put much more time and expertise into their cricket coaching than we can. All that makes what the boys achieved more remarkable. Three big group wins against strong opponents led us to a semi-final against Campbell College. Campbell hit 94 runs against us and our run chase only fell narrowly short. It would be unfair to pick out star players when all 10 boys who represented the school did so with such distinction. Never before have we won more than 1 game at the finals, never mind making a semi final. Magnificent and well done to both teams. You can see some pictures on our Twitter feed.
